This place is fantastic. My only regret is that I don't live closer otherwise I would be a regular. The service upon walking in was super-friendly and when I posed a question about my particular favorite coffee (a flat white) the owner/barista extraordinaire was happy to chat. Not only was he knowledgeable it was just a lovely exchange with someone who really cares about (and knows a lot about) coffee. All of this without the arrogance and attitude of a lot of local coffee shops I have tried. The Cortado was amazing and something I'll be having again. I also had a croissant from the case and it was fantastic. I came to Kennet Square for a dinner with friends at Talula's Table (AMAZING) and was thrilled to find Philter in the morning by chance - it's the reason I'll make the drive back to hang out for the day. LOVED IT.

First off, Kennett Square (where?!) is a little hidden gem - and by little I mean 2x2 blocks. It's a weird blend of small-town-in-boonies and hipster, and it works. Philter is a down-to-earth coffee shop in the middle of the main road. Spacious interior and very friendly staff. Along with the aroma of pastries that fill the shop, you can smell the Ceremony beans in all their glory as you enter. Can't go wrong with the lattes, and I suggest sipping it in the small seating area outside for some good people-watching.

I recently moved back to the area from Boston, where great coffee joints are as plentiful as college students and accumulating snow in January. I have yet to find a place in Chester County that can hold a candle in comparison to my usual spot up there, however Philter has become my new favorite here at home. They have great coffee as well as a few different food options both savory and sweet. Their chicken salad is really good and changes in terms of preparation semi-regularly. I also adore the interior color/decor scheme. It has a very cozy, inviting vibe and it's much quieter than the places I've been to on the Main Line in terms of volume and foot traffic. It's the kind of place perfect for meeting a friend or reading the paper. I took one star off because their chairs aren't very comfortable - they are cute and bistro-style, but seemingly meant for an outdoor patio and are kind of stiff. They don't really jive with the otherwise comfortable vibe. Also, I've wished their cashier/baristas were a bit friendlier a few times (esp. after visiting Gryphon Cafe in Wayne - which has an exceptionally warm and welcoming staff). On my first visit to Philter, I wanted to try something other than the house coffee and asked the barista if she could describe or recommend any of the other offerings. She said flatly that she hadn't tried any and didn't really know about them. A bit of a buzz-kill for a coffee enthusiast.

Had an early morning meeting in Kennett. What a great place! The oatmeal w/ walnuts cardamon and honey is awesome! Quiet as of 0630. Parking payment on the street and the lot in town doesn't start until 9am as well. Good place.

This place was a really cute coffee shop. My latte was quite good and you can tell that "Phil" has put quite a bit of care into it. The decor in the windows and the store is great, as were the photographs displayed. I especially liked the menu drawn on an old door. There is outdoor seating as well as plenty of seating indoors. My espresso chocolate chip muffin was good as well. The only issue I had was with the service - maybe it just wasn't her morning but the woman who served me seemed impatient and unfriendly. I don't think it is that hard to put on a smile when you are taking someone's order, and the people actually making the coffee were very friendly, but she just kind of put a damper on my mood. Very cute place to come though, and all their food and drinks looked great.

Really cute little place right in the heart of Kennett Square main street. We were wandering around and went into Philter for a bite at lunch time. They have a pretty sizeable selection of sandwiches (maybe about 6-8) that can also be made as salads. We got the ham and cheese sandwich, mushroom/roasted pepper sandwich, and the hummus salad. Each was really tasty and fresh. Looking around at the rest of the tables, the coffee looked very nice. Most of their seating is inside, but we were able to snag a small table outside on the sidewalk to enjoy our lunch. Highly recommend for a relaxed bite to eat!
(5)Denise K.
The inside is really cool and the coffee is good. I just think they need to be a little more organized. My latte was given away to someone else who thought it was theirs.

Great owner, great staff, fantastic coffee and food. Love the feel of shop and the window seats are great for private conversations or just people watching. Philter is one of the highlights of downtown Kennett Square.

Great place for a relaxing weekend morning. Coffee is good and sandwiches are delicious
(4)Lin C.
Stumbled upon this coffee shop... Really needed some strong coffee and the cortado really hit the spot. The affogato with vanilla ice cream is also delicious!
(5)Alice C.
The interior of this place is very contemporary, and obviously someone has been following trends. The coffee looked promising, but it ended up just being ok to my tastes -- I usually go for the creamy espressos that do not require any sugar. I guess there really isn't any similarly contemporary places around here though, so I was still glad to find this place. At least it looks spiffier than a Starbucks!
(3)Mo K.
One of my favorite coffee shops in Kennet Square; wonderful little place with a great vibe. I'm a big fan of the iced mocha here; beats out Starbucks by a mile. Last time I ate lunch here I got a turkey & apple sandwich which was pretty good, if a little dry.
(4)Kate D.
Delicious coffee that is worth the price. Beautiful, comfortable atmosphere. Very welcoming, friendly staff that are well educated on coffee and the shop.
(5)Hannah M.
I love Philter! The atmosphere is so cool and the coffee is great. Perfect little hideaway in Kennett.

I had a delicious soy latte here recently, however it was not what I ordered. Upon walking in a asked specifically if they carried almond milk - they do. "Perfect I said, I'll have an almond surprise latte." Explaining that I don't have allergies and I like everything and to just make me something special. After waiting, I asked where is my latte? It was a regular soy latte. No flavor shots. Nothing surprising - only the fact that it was not almond milk. After explaining what I had wanted the barista had the gonads to tell me I should just try the regular if I didn't know what I wanted. I knew what I wanted, I still know what I wanted and it is not anything from this place. Hopefully they make it to the two year anniversary, hopefully they get their act together.

A nice discovery in tiny Kennett Square, where most places were closed on a late Sunday afternoon. Had a really well made latte with an extra shot (so necessary after hours spent wandering around Longwood Gardens...), sitting outside and relaxing to the sound of the occasional car. The indoor ambiance was charmingly off-beat, with a menu written on an old beautifully framed window. The shop sells bags of Ceremony Coffee, which would be a nice treat to take home with your mushrooms!
(3)Kelly S.
This place is simply wonderful. The coffee is perfect, the food is delicious, and the service is friendly and attentive. This place is a great addition to Kennett Square.

I don't think this is just a good local coffee shop, I think it's a great coffee shop and a destination no matter where you're visiting from. I go out of my way to visit shops like this, and I'm lucky this one happens to be local. Chris, the owner, is so welcoming. He takes his craft seriously and it shows. The atmosphere he's created and the amazing coffee, tea, and food he offers are remarkable. You can always tell a professional by the cleanliness of their workspace and his is pristine. That makes for really tasty and consistent coffee. Whether you're getting a pour over, a latte, or the house brew, it is sure to exceed expectations.
(5)Jackie C.
Cute place, trendy well decorated. I didn't find the staff particular friendly or warm. Especially being a new place they should say "goodbye", "thank you." The food is delicious, but expensive for what it is. By no means am I cheap, but I order the chicken salad sandwich, which was very good. It was $7.50 and I got a measly spread of the littlest bit of chicken salad. I'm sure it's great for coffee and quick little bite. Will go back, maybe they will improve the things I spoke about?
(3)Matt S.
Finally opened, and I love it. Great coffee, wonderful addition to State St. Actually met the owner Chris and his family while I was in, they couldn't be nicer.

Does a coffee shop get any better than this??? Great staff, awesome coffee, great pastries. I love coming here every chance I get.
(5)Brian R.
I picked my hotel specifically because of the proximity of Philter...yes, I love coffee. The website and pics looked good and Yelp had great reviews. Let me tell you, this was one of my better decisions. The staff was friendly, the coffee was spectacular! I had a couple of various nice conversations with Chris, the owner and he helped me picked out a couple of pounds to take back home. As the week went on, I visited in the morning and a couple of afternoons. Each time the shop was comfortable and relaxed and as I sampled the food, I realized it was as good as the coffee. Philter is not to be missed when driving through or anywhere near Kennett Square!

I must preface this review with a clear statement that I am an espresso fan. I love great, dark espresso. This coffee shop is a bit more than an hour from my house, and I drove here specifically to try out a new high-end coffee roaster in the area. It's definitely not bad! In fact, it's certainly better than average. If there were 'half stars,' I would very comfortably rate it a 3.5. But to me, a 4 star review would be something that I would drive an hour to visit again. I'm sorry to say it, but unless I learned of an advancement in their roasting, I would not drive that far. Stop by if I'm in the neighborhood?? ABSOLUTELY! Decor is great. Lots of coffee shop personality. My breakfast sandwich was ok. I had the egg, roasted pepper and Kennet mushroom sandwich. It was very sweet, and I don't care for sweet sandwiches - but that's probably my own fault for ordering the peppers. My espresso was incredibly light. That is not my expectation for espresso, and I don't think that's my fault at all. Most folks expect a very dark, robust drink when ordering espresso. To the credit of the counter staff, I asked to buy their two darkest roasts, one pound each. One of them said "everything we roast is very light." ...yup!! I sure do wish them luck, and I'm sure that tons of folks will adore the super-light roasts. But for this coffee but, I'm more than a little sad it wasn't on par with La Colombe or Ultimo. Hopefully they grow into that!!! Addition: I don't read other reviews before writing mine. After posting, I read a few others. Service issues were a common theme for a few. There are three young workers here on a Saturday morning. They are totally just 'hanging out.' Not a bad vibe if you are looking to attract college kids who don't really expect much in terms of quality service. For a more high end place, they need better training and supervision. A great manager or an owner looking over their shoulders would probably mean fewer dirty tables, a cleaner back counter area, and more of a "we want to WOW you" approach. Definitely another area for improvement. I think the problem is a disconnection from the look of the place and the running of it. So much potential, short on results.

Philter has, put simply, the best coffee in the world. After my coffee experience in Italy I thought I could never go back to bland, burnt-tasting coffee served at popular coffee joints. Luckily I discovered Philter and do I dare say they may have actually surpassed Rome's espresso? If not they certainly matched it. I do know this for sure, when your two teen-aged kids rave about their laté with words like "smooth and velvety", it's got to be something special. The kids were right! Philter does not serve your average cup of coffee. They've got it down to a perfect science, the way coffee should be made but usually isn't. As a result, Philter is a coffee Nirvana.

Hooray for Philter! I work in Kennett, and while Dunkin/Wawa/Starbucks are the same distance for me, it's lovely to have a coffee option that helps support local businesses & the township. The coffee & food are tasty, the atmosphere is cool without being wildly pretentious (think: a more masculine Anthropologie), and the staff has always been pretty friendly. I also enjoy the fact that I can put any charge on my card without having to pay a minimum amount, as I usually only carry about 27 cents with me at any given time. I hope Philter continues to be successful!
(4)Charlene R.
Absolutely the best coffee shop around. Great options for coffee and they make the best latte's around! Always friendly and great service!
(5)Matt M.
Good new place in town. Newer. I like the coffee and its a better place than others to have a breakfast meeting now. The coffee is top notch and the sandwiches are a very nice change of pace. Its definately worth a stop.
(4)Bruce H.
Very impressed. Good food, coffee, and a great atmosphere. Will definitely be returning regularly.
(5)Shirin Z.
Most delicious sandwiches and espresso drinks. They are THE BEST there is. The atmosphere is Amazing and the people working there are so kind. You Must try this place. It's really Incredible . Highly recommend. It was so worth the 20 mins drive and crossing the state line. I will be back real soon.

Fantastic coffee and food but not so keen on the service. Every time food comes out waaaay before coffee.... Food is either cold waiting for coffee or half gone by the time coffee arrives. Today, waited inside for ~9 minutes while my breakfast sandwich was delivered to my table outside .... Half eaten by flies by the time I got there. Asked for new bread and omg if looks could kill! . I'll still come back ... But just have to strategically order next time (and stay inside)!

I have consumed a variety of different drinks at Philter, and I have not once been displeased with my selection! Philter is the only spot to go if you are anywhere near the Kennett Square area. My fiancée and I love to go on rainy days and early sunny mornings. We sit at one of the two window benches and talk while we people watch. We also love the breakfast! Everyone must go to Philter!

(5) ~ EXCELLENT Overall Food & Service!:) LOVE their "Bonavita Porcelain Immersion Dripper" brewed coffee, which is a mouthful to say, but WOW, what a way to brew an Excellent cup of coffee! They even sell the same in-store brewing equipment , so you can try it at home(which I did:) And the Owner(Chris) goes beyond the call of duty making sure your Coffee experience is as fulfilling as his passion is from making it!;) In addition, they offer very good gourmet sandwiches and soups for Lunch;)

I've been to my fair share of coffee houses after living in NYC and Philter is up there with the best. First things first, the decor is awesome. Clean and fresh, yet rustic. Plus there are plenty of tables. Yet the coffee is the real star of the show - tons of options and all delicious. I really appreciate a coffee shop that serves cortado because it reminds of Spain. Next time I visit I hope to try the food!
(5)Reesh B.
Very nice ambiance and very good coffee!! Cappuccino (even with skim milk) was very good. They seem to have a decent collection of teas as well. Rustic wooden tables and laid back nature of the shop is perfect for a late afternoon coffee.. Enjoyed it!

At last, the doors have officially open to a warm and welcoming coffee shop in Kennett Square! The shop is very unique offering ample seating for 2 to 4 guests at beautifully hand crafted tables. Two window seats with barstools are also at the front of the store which overlook State Street as well as little tables on the sidewalk out front. The menu is impressive and offers breakfast, salads, soups, sandwiches and even a kids selection for warm drinks. Three coffee flavors plus a house blend is sure to treat any coffee lovers taste. A full selection of teas, 12 to be exact, from local tea Artisan, Mrs. Robinson's Tea Shop are available for those who indulge in specialty tea. Espresso available as well. All menu items are available Togo which is very convenient since I was able to take home some items for the family! Hours of operation allow for all to enjoy between 6am and 8pm Monday to Thursday and until 9pm Friday and Saturday. Be sure to bring plenty of quarters for parking for once you come in you won't want to leave! Bravo Philter Coffee!

Tried this place for the first time today and absolutely loved it! They really know their coffee. I am usually a cup of sugar and cream with a splash of coffee kinda girl, but the Kenya was sooooo good I drank it black! Also tried the cold brew and it was excellent. One of my new favorite places in Kennett. A must try if you're in the area.
(5)Patrick S.
This is a great new cafe with an artisanal approach to their craft. I haven't had such a great coffee and breakfast sandwich in some time and not anywhere around here.
(5)Lauren B.
This place is exceptional!! The decor and ambiance is warm, welcoming and cozy. The handcrafted wooden tables are beautiful and the light fixtures are one-of-a-kind. The coffee and tea selections are vast and are sure to satisfy any palate. The breakfast, lunch, homemade soups and baked goods are all so enticing. I enjoyed a prosciutto, brie and arugula sandwich on a baguette and a roiboos tea chai latte. Both were delicious! The owner, Chris, is a true artist when it comes to coffee and is incredibly knowledgable about what he has to offer. Whether a local to Kennett Square, or just passing through, you don't want to miss a visit at the new Philter coffee!!
(5)Suma C.
Perfect addition to Kennett. I got a great cup of coffee and my friend a chai latte and both of us were happy. The staff was welcoming and quick. I stayed chatting with my friend for two hours and though they were busy we were not rushed out in any way. Will definitely be returning.

Really had great expectations for this place because I love to frequent new small businesses in Kennett, but it was a total let down. It was really ridiculous to wait 10 minutes for a cup of coffee. Come on now , we're not splitting the atom here. The Americano was a shot added to a hot cup of water. What? Weak.. The decaf a" pour over "was left sitting in the pot for 8 minutes while the woman waiting on us and the woman pouring the coffee disappeared . Disorganized chaos. We had to ask the owner ( who was indifferent by the way) if he could get it for us. By the time I got the decaf it was warm and weak. Sorry but the coffee here had nothing to be desired. Although the place was tastefully decorated and warm on a cold winter's day, I walked out of this place wondering why is this place crowded and remembering the Emperor's New Clothes.
(1)Jeff C.
Well, it's not really fair, but I've had two cafe americanos there, and they didn't even come close to the coffee across the street at Talulah's Table. But if these reviews keep coming in, perhaps I'll try again, maybe I caught a bad brewing day.
(2)Evie M.
Fabulous coffee shop with wifi. Delicious assortment of baked goods, breakfast and lunch, cold brewed iced coffee in the summer, and wonderful coffee. Each cup brewed to order. Nice ambiance, not terribly noisy, and clean! Friendly service, and family friendly. Get there early as tables fill up on weekends and snowy days.
(5)Meech F.
The coffee here is exceptional! The decor is great, and the owner is super nice. It was only their second day open for business. We're definitely coming back, this is the best coffee we've found in the area. I can finally get started on my novel!
